Two cars with the same model badge can need different daytime running light components. Headlight options, production changes and regional specifications all affect which DRL boards or modules fit. Getting those details right is more useful than choosing from a colour photograph alone.

Before you choose: Match the DRL product to both the vehicle and the headlight assembly. Model, chassis, production date, facelift status, lighting specification and any part-number restrictions must agree with the listing.

DRL fitment checks before ordering
Information to check Why it matters
Chassis or generation A model name can span several different cars
Production date Registration year may not identify the exact build specification
Facelift status Pre-LCI and LCI assemblies may use different parts
Headlight type Xenon, LED, adaptive, Matrix and laser applications need checking
Regional specification Some products specify EU applications
Existing part numbers Useful for comparing against the listed replacement references

Start with the chassis and build information

Identify the precise vehicle generation, such as BMW F22 or G42, rather than relying on “2 Series”. Check the production information and the listing’s date range.

If the car has replacement or aftermarket headlights, mention that before ordering. The headlight currently fitted is what the component must match, even when the vehicle’s original specification suggests something else.

Treat pre-facelift and facelift products separately

BMW uses LCI to describe facelift versions. DRL components sold for a pre-LCI headlight should not be assumed to fit the LCI assembly.

Our F22/F23 pre-LCI module listing covers 2014–2017 xenon-headlight applications. A separate F22/F23/F87 LCI yellow module listing covers 2018–2021 applications. Those separate listings are a reason to check the specification, not to choose whichever dates look closest.

Xenon headlights can still have LED daytime running lights

A headlight assembly can use a different light source for its main lighting function from the one used for its DRL signature. A DRL board listed for a xenon-equipped car is not necessarily a xenon bulb.

This is why searching only for “LED” can be misleading. Select the DRL component intended for the complete headlight system your vehicle has.

Adaptive, Matrix and laser restrictions matter

Do not treat these terms as interchangeable. Follow the wording on the specific listing, and ask for help if you cannot identify the equipment.

For example, our BMW G80/G82 yellow board listing is restricted to EU-spec laser headlights. Our Audi A3/S3/RS3 yellow board listing is for 2017–2020 non-Matrix LED headlights. Neither description establishes compatibility with another lighting system.

Use part numbers alongside photographs

Where the product lists reference numbers, compare them with the existing component or ask your installer to identify them. Photographs of the full headlight and its labels can also help.

Avoid dismantling a headlight solely to find a number if you are unfamiliar with the procedure. Start with the accessible information and send it to us for advice.

Confirm what the kit replaces

Check whether the product supplies boards or complete modules, how many pieces are included, and whether thermal materials are supplied. A different package format can change the fitting work.

Even a no-coding product can require significant access work. Some installations involve bumper and headlight removal, so establish the procedure before estimating labour or installation time.

What to send for a compatibility check

Send your model, production year, chassis code, headlight photographs and any accessible part references. Include the product link you are considering and tell us about previous headlight changes.

We can help you work through the fitting details. Do not assume registration lookup, a similar-looking light signature or a shared connector alone confirms the match.

Frequently asked questions

Does an M Sport badge identify the headlights?

No. A trim or model badge alone does not confirm the fitted headlight option.

Will a laser-headlight DRL kit fit ordinary LED headlights?

Do not assume so. Follow the product’s explicit headlight restrictions.

Can I choose by registration year?

Use it as a starting point, then confirm the build and headlight information required by the listing.

Find the right DRLs for your build

Match your car and headlight specification, then choose the finish you want. Check individual product fitting notes and intended-use information before ordering.
