Shopping for daytime running light upgrades can be confusing when similar-looking products are described as boards, modules or LED sets. The difference affects what arrives in the box and the work your installer needs to carry out. Before comparing colours or prices, establish which type your headlights require.
Before you choose: A DRL board is the LED circuit board. A complete DRL module may include that board already mounted to its heatsink or supporting assembly. Check the actual package contents: the word “module” alone does not guarantee a particular level of assembly.

| Check | DRL boards | Complete DRL modules |
|---|---|---|
| Typical supplied component | Replacement LED circuit board | Board with additional assembly parts, as listed |
| Heatsink | May require reuse of the original | May be included; confirm the listing |
| Thermal materials | May be required for board fitting | Follow the specific module instructions |
| Access | Depends on the headlight and vehicle | Still depends on the headlight and vehicle |
| Compatibility | Exact headlight application required | Exact headlight application required |
What is a DRL board?
A board carries the LEDs that generate the daytime running light illumination. It is a component for a compatible headlight system, rather than a complete headlight or a universal bulb.
Depending on the application, fitting can involve removing an existing board, preparing the mounting surface and fitting the replacement using the specified thermal material. Our BMW G80/G82 EU-spec laser-headlight board listing, for example, supplies four DRL boards and thermal adhesive paste.
What is a complete DRL module?
A module can package the LED board with a heatsink and other supporting parts. This can change the installation work compared with transferring a bare board, but the contents must be checked for the exact product.
For example, our BMW F20/F21 LCI LED-headlight yellow module listing explicitly describes replacement boards and heatsinks. It supplies four modules, with two per side, and recommends professional installation.
Why the heatsink and thermal material matter
LED components generate heat during operation. The heatsink and the specified thermal interface form part of the assembly’s heat-management arrangement, so the fitting method matters as much as the electrical connection.
Use the materials and preparation instructions stated for the product. Do not substitute ordinary glue or invent an adhesive thickness, curing time or mounting method. If those details are unclear, ask for guidance before starting.

Does plug-and-play mean an easy installation?
Plug-and-play describes how a compatible component connects or integrates. It does not tell you how easy that component is to reach. A direct replacement can still sit in a difficult position on the headlight.
Some installations require bumper and headlight removal to gain access. Other applications have a different access route. Confirm the procedure for your exact vehicle and headlight before booking work or deciding to fit the parts yourself.
Can you choose either type for the same car?
Only if each listing explicitly covers your headlight application. A board advertised for laser headlights is not automatically an alternative to a module intended for non-laser headlights on a similarly named car.
Match the chassis, production dates, facelift status, headlight type, regional specification and part references where available. Similar colours and connector photographs are not enough to establish interchangeability.
How to compare the total job
Compare package contents and the work required, rather than the component price alone. Ask your installer whether original parts must be reused, whether thermal materials are supplied and what access or reassembly work is involved.
Where a vehicle already has a lighting fault, have that diagnosed before treating a colour upgrade as the repair. A different LED colour does not resolve a damaged light guide, connection or separate control fault.
Ask us before choosing
Send Auto Haus Carbon your vehicle model, year, chassis code, headlight photographs and existing component numbers where available. Tell us whether you are comparing a board set with a complete module set.
We are on hand with technical advice and fitting guidance. Confirming the component and installation requirements first helps you order a product that matches the actual headlights on your car.

Frequently asked questions
Are DRL modules complete headlights?
No. The products discussed here are components for compatible headlight assemblies.
Is thermal adhesive always included?
No. Several board listings include it, but check your chosen product’s package contents.
Do all modules need no coding?
No. Coding information is product-specific and applies to the stated compatible application.
