A BMW door projector upgrade starts before the original lamp comes out. Confirming the fitting, understanding how the retaining clip releases and planning the final checks can make the job much more straightforward.
The key point: This is a preparation and fitting checklist for replacing compatible existing lamps. The exact removal procedure depends on your BMW; use the vehicle-specific instructions rather than forcing a lamp from an assumed release point.

1. Confirm your BMW projector size first
Identify the chassis and door position, then compare your existing lamp with the new unit. Our BMW size guide explains the short 50mm and long 70mm types used in the guide. Match the housing, retaining arrangement and connector as well as the nominal size.
Do this for the actual door you are upgrading. Do not assume a model name or a photograph of another owner’s car confirms your equipment.
2. Prepare the work area
Park securely, allow the lamp to cool and protect the surrounding trim. Have the appropriate trim tool and vehicle-specific instructions ready. Follow the vehicle guidance for switching off or isolating the relevant circuit before disconnecting the light.
If the process requires work beyond a simple lamp replacement, or you are unsure about electrical isolation, ask an installer. Do not use a generic installation article as a wiring diagram.
3. Release the original lamp carefully
Locate the retaining point described in the appropriate instructions. Release the lamp without levering aggressively against the door card. Support the unit and disconnect it using the connector’s release mechanism, rather than pulling on the wires.
Keep the original lamp and note how it was installed. If the new housing or connector differs, pause and check compatibility instead of modifying the opening.

4. Check the replacement before securing it
Compare the units side by side. Check any left/right markings and instructions for the pair. Connect only as directed, making sure no wire is trapped or strained.
Where the fitting instructions allow, check operation and projected orientation before fully securing the unit. Do not dismantle sealed optics or force connectors in an attempt to change the image.
5. Finish with a practical function check
Secure the lamp as specified and check it sits properly in the door. Test the projected image, clearance and door operation. Confirm the light switches as expected when the door opens and closes, allowing for any normal timed delay.
Test both sides under similar conditions. If you see flickering, a warning, poor seating or an unexpected result, contact us with photographs and the product details before altering wiring.
What if your BMW has no existing door light?
A replacement guide does not cover creating a new powered light position. A blanking cover or reflector does not establish that wiring is present.
