BMW G Series Start/Stop Button Cap Fitting Guide

Fitting Guides / BMW G Series start/stop button

Follow this visual guide when fitting a matching replacement BMW G Series start/stop button cap. Compare your existing cap shape and mounting with the replacement before starting. Console designs and cap fittings vary; the illustrations are schematic.

Check fitment first

This method is for matching replacement caps only. Remove the cap, not the switch assembly. If the cap resists removal, stop and contact us rather than levering against the surrounding trim or forcing incompatible parts.

Tools required

  • Clean microfibre cloth
  • Extractor putty
  • Matching replacement start/stop button cap

The illustrated alternative is a glue-stick puller. Allow the glue to cool and set before pulling.

How to replace the button cap

  1. Prepare. Park safely, apply the parking brake and switch the ignition off. Keep the key away from the vehicle.
  2. Clean and dry. Wipe the original button face with a clean microfibre cloth. Let it dry fully.
  3. Apply and bond. Press extractor putty firmly onto the cap face. Form a grip and allow it to bond.
  4. Pull straight. Pull firmly straight away from the button face, removing the cap only. If it resists, stop. Reapply the puller or contact us. Do not lever against the trim.
  5. Clean and align. Remove residue without letting it fall into the switch. Remove any protective film and align the new cap.
  6. Press and check. Press the cap straight into place until seated. Check that it moves freely and returns normally. Restore the key and check normal operation while safely parked.
